What is Humanism?
Humanism is a set of values that emphasizes rationality, responsibility and the common good. It is a positive philosophy, confident that people can find meaning and fulfillment in this life without religion or superstition.
Humanism values inclusivity, respect, integrity and ethics. It isn't simply a repudiation or rejection of organized religion, but an alternative.
Humanism celebrates our ability to reason, question, and find the answers through art, science and critical thinking. We all have the capacity to make the world a better place, and it is our responsibility to do so.

I believe the most important way to put Humanism to work as an officiant is through inclusivity. Traditionally, the only space for getting married or honoring the life of a loved one was through a church. Too often, these places of worship have excluded those who do not conform to their rules or ideals, leaving them with virtually no options.
Rituals are important to people, and I believe everyone should have the freedom to celebrate the most meaningful occasions of their lives the way they want to.

A Humanist officiant can offer an alternative to traditional religious ceremonies, but also mark important circumstances for which ceremonies don't usually exist. Significant moments, such as the blending of a family, the change of identity from one gender to another, the amicable divorce, are all events that someone may want to observe in a public way. The Humanist officiant can afford visibility and meaning to these occasions, as long as they fit the Humanist values of ethical, principled and conscientious circumstances.
